Midway Village Museum

Midway Village Museum is a Victorian Village of 24 historical buildings filled with artifacts of the era as well as several beautiful 19th century gardens. Interpreters in authentic period dress are available seasonally for guided tours. It was organized in 1968 for the purpose of collecting, preserving and interpreting the history of the Rockford area.

The main museum building holds a number of permanent exhibits reflecting Rockford's history and culture:
- Flight. Glide through this exhibit to learn about Rockford's pioneer aviators.
 - Queen City of the Prairies. Visitors to the Queen City of the Prairies exhibit understand that early Rockford  was not an isolated frontier outpost, but was quickly plugged into the expanding nation.
 - The Dolls' House. see a collection of doll houses and miniature homes representing countries around the world. The Old Dolls’ House was built in 1988 and houses one woman’s collection of doll houses inspired by her world travels.
 - The Girls of Summer. The Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League is Midway Village Museum exhibit that tells the story of the Peaches and their place in the League.
 - The Missing Link: Socks, Monkeys and Rockford's Industrial Past. Come monkey around in the exhibit and enjoy Sock Monkeys, Red-heeled socks, and stories about the sock knitting industry in Rockford from its beginnings in the 1870s until its end in the 1990s. 
 - The Old Millhouse.
The Old Millhouse, located on the edge of the Museum's Severin Lake, is a working replica of an operating water-powered machine shop With no flowing water to drive the wheel, electric pumps are used to deliver water to the sluice. But, from that point, everything works by water power, just as it did over 100 years ago.
 - The Village. Picturesque Midway Village features twenty-four historic structures including a hardware store, general store, print shop, blacksmith shop, one-room schoolhouse, general store, hotel, fire station, police station, hospital, bank,carpenter shop, town hall, law office and a variety of homes.
Education and Programs. The Midway Village Museum Education Department offers a wide variety of history themed programs and events for all ages covering time periods from early pioneer settlement through World War II.
Research and Collections. The Collections Department is at the heart of the museum’s efforts to collect and preserve Rockford’s History. The Department is responsible for the following activities: caring for and documenting the Museum’s collection of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts; collecting historical artifacts for the collection through conversations with members of the public; assisting individuals and organizations in completing historical research; acting as a resource to individuals and organizations with questions regarding the proper care of historical artifacts.
Interpreters dressed in turn-of-the-century style guide you through the pages of yesteryear. Visit several of our Village buildings and see and hear how your ancestors spent their days.
