Lincoln`s New Salem State Historic Site

 
The New Salem Lincoln League is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood. We offer a large volunteer program, where interested people can work in the village, at the visitor's center, or one of our stores and become an active member of our site operation.

Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site includes Twelve log houses, the Rutledge Tavern, ten workshops, stores, mills and a school where church services were held have been reproduced and furnished as they might have been in the 1830s. The furnishings, including many articles actually used by the New Salem people of Lincoln's time and others dating back to the same time period, were assembled and donated to the state by the Old Salem Lincoln League. The collection includes such early-nineteenth-century articles as wheat cradles, candle molds, cord beds, flax hackles, wood cards, dough and cornmeal chests and early American pewter.
School Tours and Adult Groups. Groups of 15 or more should arrange for a reservation.
Tours of Historic Village. All tours are self-guided.
Picnicking. One shelterhouse in picnic area; shelter and tables on first-come basis. Three shelterhouses down by Sangamon River.
Camping. Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site has a modern campground consisting of two shower buildings located within the campground. It has 200 campsites, of which 100 are electrified. The maximum length of stay for a camping party and/or the camping unit is limited to 14 nights at each area within any 30 day period. Keep your pets or animals or your site and leashed. For the sake of all campers, disorderly conduct or unreasonable noise will not be permitted. Keep your fires in camp stoves provided by the State or in your own burners. For safety, children should use axes, hunting knives and hatchets only with adult supervision.
Performances:
- Theater In The Park. Performances are held Fridays through Sundays from mid June till late August in a 475 seat outdoor amphitheater designed for comfort, with auditorium-style seating, concession and a unique multi-level stage. In the event of rain, a total of 200 people with marked tickets will be admitted to New Salem's smaller indoor theater.
- Chautauqua Series and Theatre in the Park. Chautauqua was a popular association and amusement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The heart and soul of Chautauqua was the talent, the lectures, the entertainers, and the teachers who provided the culture and entertainment. Chautauquas in the rural areas, gathered and the largest audiences and made the greatest impact on the communities. New Salem continues that Chautauqua tradition by offering a series of plays, concerts and lectures during the off-season. All shows are held in the 250 seat indoor theater.
