The Illinois State Library was created more than 150 years ago to serve the needs of state government. Today, The Illinois State Library is a computer-age doorway to worldwide information, providing patrons with an electronic bridge to the collections of universities, public and corporate libraries, and new information systems that will continue to develop into the 21st century and beyond.

The Illinois State Library
The Illinois State Library is dedicated to providing access to knowledge and information through reading and writing, providing patrons the right to use library materials and services - both electronic and in print - without being disturbed or impeded, and providing patrons and employees a secure and comfortable environment.
Anyone can use the sources onsite at the Illinois State Library. Children ages 17 and over may use the library without adult supervision. Children ages 12 - 16 must either be accompanied and supervised at all times by an adult or file with the Illinois State Library a completed copy of the Permission for Library Use form.
The Illinois State Library has information for researching family histories, including military records, census information, information on counties and information about city directories. The Illinois State Library does not have many popular novels.
The Literacy Mission of Secretary White's Literacy Office is to enable agencies in Illinois to offer services to help Illinois adults and their families who read at the lowest levels to increase their reading ability in English.

You can borrow items or request interlibrary loans, ask a reference question, renew or reserve ISL items.
The Illinois State Library does not have open stacks. Library staff members obtain books from the stacks. They have a schedule for paging books.
Permanent Art Collection within the Illinois State Library. Inside the Illinois State Library is a permanent collection of 33 works of visual art (painting, prints, drawing and photography) by contemporary Illinois artists. All of the pieces are part of a unifying concept - "Portrait of Illinois".
Talking books and Braille service.  In conjunction with the Illinois State Library and local talking book centers, we provide a full range of library services specializing in braille and talking books. Our goal is to enrich the quality of life for all residents of Illinois who are eligible for our program.
The Illinois State Library will award up to 15 training grants per academic year to encourage college graduates with demonstrated scholarship, talent, and potential to enter the library profession, to encourage these new librarians to work in Illinois libraries and to improve and stimulate development of library service in Illinois.
