Concordia Avondale Campus

Concordia Avondale Campus believes that access to quality programs should not be tied to income, we demonstrate this belief with our sliding tuition scale as we provide working families with nationally accredited preschool and after-school programs. With our expansion to Whipple Street, we are restoring a proud, neighborhood anchor to serve yet another community.

We will also expand into new program areas – such as teen leadership, senior, intergenerational, and adult learning – so that all generations that make up Chicago communities are served. Concordia Avondale Campus serves a diverse group of people from multiple generations and varied ethnic and racial backgrounds, cultural identities, and faith traditions.
Once upon a time in a Chicago neighborhood called North Center, three single mothers, each named Barbara, struggled to raise their children. They had little money and only limited child care was available. One day, the three Barbaras approached Concordia Lutheran Church in their neighborhood. Even though the women were not members, Concordia responded and its members got involved. Together they created award-winning early childhood, after school and summer camp programs. Two Barbaras joined the Board, establishing a practice of community and parental governance.
More than 1,000 families were served with educational programs, professional staff, a fully equipped activity room, and an outdoor play-lot.  A sliding tuition scaled ensured that all families had access to quality programs, regardless of income.  The center even gained accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).  After 15 years of successful, growing programs, Concordia had an opportunity to expand beyond Seeley Avenue, to respond to another community in need, Avondale.
Today we are Concordia Avondale Campus, with a mission to "create involved communities where all our neighbors can gather, learn, and grow". We provide a place where varied economic, ethnic, racial, and faith backgrounds come together in an atmosphere of mutual appreciation and respect.
We are expanding both our physical and programmatic boundaries to serve more neighbors in even more ways. We will replicate our quality children`s programs and also offer teen leadership programs, adult education, senior activities, and intergenerational programs.  Our goal is to serve all of the generations that make a community strong. Our vision has attracted more than $9 million in local, state, federal, foundation, and private monies – enough to begin restoration of a vacant 3-story school building and rectory.  With the help of community residents, local officials, and other friends, we will open the doors of our new Whipple location and begin serving families in September, 2006.
And we will always construct our programs – both at our Seeley and Whipple locations – so that all our neighbors can gather, learn, and grow.
